Why is a sloth a deadly sin?

I’m talking about the animal, btw.

  2. My guess would go back to the saying that idle hands are the devil’s workshop and thereby not doing anything would allow the devil to have you do what he desired therefore it’s considered a deadly sin.

  4. Probably because ancient societies and cultures depended a lot more upon manual labour than our culture does. If each person within that society did not "pull their weight" either in employment or slavery, the society as a whole suffered, and especially the higher echelons of that society who relied on the labour of many servants and slaves to maintain their lifestyle.

Its important to remember the cultural landscape which existed when and where the bible was written and translated, and that it was a tool of cultural control as much as it was a religious text. Witness the forbidding of homosexuality, there as a means to ensure a high reproductive rate within society.

  5. Laziness is the devil’s playground in the most literal sense.

God wants us to make use of every minute of the time He has given us on Earth so that we may glorify Him through good works. We are nothing without Him. God gives us gifts and not discovering or utilizing those gifts that God has given us is a sin in itself. If you are lazy you’re not aligning your life with the plan in which God has for you. You are allowing the devil pull you away from God’s purpose. Hard work and pursuit of your every talent and ability so that we may glorify Him and help others = God’s will for us on earth. Sloth= the devil’s will for us to be pulled away from God.

Laziness allows worldly things to corrupt our lives. Worldly things are pop music, culture, video games, etc. The things that will last a short while. True joy is found in God. The things of the world will perish with the world, while the things in God will last forever.
