Why are so many Christians overweight, when sloth and gluttony are one of the seven deadly sins?

I was passing a church the other day and I notice how fat most on the congregation were, it shocked and disgusted me. Especially as there are starving people in the world. Didn’t Jesus teach Christians to have a little self control?

Why are so many Christians overweight?

They like to pick and chose.

  1. You must be thinking of atheists, they’re all fat because they don’t exercise and eat pizza all day.

  2. They fail to see the truth in the spiritual significance of honoring their temple.

  4. For many of the strict Christian groups, food is the only kind of indulgence they are allowed. So, many are going to overeat.

  6. Christians are overweight because they don’t suffer from the ill-effects of Islam. Islamic countries tend to have a poor population, while Christian countries are richer.

That’s not just Christians. That’s Americans in general.
Obesity and genes don’t just belong to anyone who decides to be Christian.
I am Christian and my whole family is skinny.

  10. No one is perfect, one persons sin may be gluttony as anothers may be lying. Christians all struggle with many different sins. The devil is going to fight to get you to sin in any way he can. Therefore he attacks you where you are most vulnerable

  11. Why are there Christians that have abortions, sex outside of marriage, divorce and remarry, drink and get drunk, etc. ? We are ALL sinners. I’m Catholic and overweight. I eat because of various reasons that are personal. But I’m trying to work on it. Gluttony is my great sin and has been for many years. But I pray about it.

In America, the junk foods are the cheapest. I can’t walk very well, so driving through a drive thru is the easiest way to get food for myself. I can’t walk through a grocery store and I have no one to shop for me.

  13. Because Christians still struggle with sin. No Christian this side of death should ever claim to have "arrived." Being overweight is an obvious sin – it literally precedes us into the door. Yet, there are far more sins that go unseen and so are even more dangerous, for it allows you to go on thinking you are OK because you have a slim waistline. Sin is not ultimately about externals – though external behavior can point to a heart problem – but is instead a heart issue. There are multiple issues why someone might turn to food rather than God, just as some of you turn to money or power or sex or prestige or lots of other things.

Being a Christian doesn’t mean you will be sinless, nor does it mean you will "sin less" – instead, it means that you have declared war on sin and will continue to fight it as long as you have breath. But we all fail, and we get defeated in skirmishes. This is what is wrong with so many churches – they treat sin as if it is an issue of information or willpower. Telling someone to "just eat less" is not helpful. Telling someone to "just trust Jesus" is also not helpful. We need to become more adept at using our creativity to link heart-to-heart with someone and help them to see what they are using for a God-substitute. But all of you struggle with something – and it is something deadly. Not just us large people …
