    When Catholic Mass is celebrated in its most solemn form, the thurifer (that’s the man with his handbag on fire) incenses the priest and the congregation. The congregation get nine swings of the thurible – that’s because there are ten commandments but since they’ve bothered to turn up, we can give them the benefit of the doubt on observing the sabbath. The priest gets six swings of the thurible – that’s because there are seven deadly sins, but since he’s bothered to get out of bed, we can give him the benefit of the doubt on sloth.
