Why is pride a deadly sin?
What’s wrong with parents taking pride in their kids, or someone taking pride in their work
That type of pride is ok,but don’t let go to your head.
What is Pride You’ve heard the expression: "Pride goeth before the fall;" but are all forms of pride dangerous? And what kind of fall are we talking about?
What if you are proud to be an American, a Canadian, or an Australian? What about parents and teachers who always tell children to take pride in their achievements? And employers who want workers to take pride in their work? Are they all wrong? What’s wrong with pride?
Well, in the context above, nothing. Being proud of your country, your race, or your association with a group is not a bad, neither is being proud of a job well done or of reaching a goal. This kind of pride is experiencing joy in achievement or having gratitude for a sense of belonging. That’s okay;
Self pride is an inordinate love of the self: super-confidence and distorted self-esteem that ignores one’s shortcomings.
Pride is bad when it becomes arrogance, conceit and vanity. Self pride exaggerates one’s abilities and accomplishments and ignores one’s imperfections and failings.
Pride makes people believe that they are better than everyone else and “above the rules” so they can rationalize behaviors such as lying, cheating, stealing, insulting, and refusing to accept authority over them.
Self pride is an inflated ego; it is the unnatural, unbalanced tendency to exalt oneself over others, and even over God.
Anti-Authoritarianism as a Form of Pride“No one is going to tell me what to do” is an example of anti-authoritarianism: a common modern-day expression of pride.
This pride is expressed by the refusal to obey those in authority because the ego can’t accept the idea that someone else is more powerful, more intelligent, or has more influence. Pride prevents people from seeking necessary help and wisdom from others and from working effectively together.
Overcoming pride requires humility. Humility is not false self-deprecation (insulting yourself so others can say otherwise), rather it is recognizing that all gifts and talents come from God and acknowledging as such.
For example, if someone were to compliment your good singing voice, a prideful response would be: “You’re right, I do have an incredible voice, it’s about time you noticed it.” A self-deprecating response would be: “Oh, no, I can’t sing. My voice is terrible.”
But a humble answer would be: “Thank you. I’m grateful that God has blessed me with this voice and I’m glad I could share it with you.” Humbly giving God the credit He deserves is the antidote to self pride.
As for me i have and take pride in everything i do,even saying i am sorry for some thing i did wrong.I do not wait for the other person to say it.Like this song tells it all!!!! You can see and hear it.

The Living Years
Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I’m a prisoner
To all my Father held so dear
I know that I’m a hostage
To all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I’m afraid that’s all we’ve got
You say you just don’t see it
He says it’s perfect sense
You just can’t get agreement
In this present tense
We all talk a different language
Talking in defence
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It’s the bitterness that lasts
So Don’t yield to the fortunes
You sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective
On a different day
And if you don’t give up, and don’t give in
You may just be O.K.
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye
I wasn’t there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn’t get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I’m sure I heard his echo
In my baby’s new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
Say it loud, say it clear
You can listen as well as you hear
It’s too late when we die
To admit we don’t see eye to eye

Because all things are created by God and through God, including parent’s kids and people’s work. It becomes dangerous when people begin to attribute their work to themselves and not to God, because then they begin to think of themselves as better than their brothers and sisters of humanity and then ultimately as better than God Himself, as you can see by many of the atheists here.
Such as a stance will eventually lead to spiritual death. This is exactly what happened to Lucifer.

Jesus Christ
Won’t answer the first question, but the answer to the second one is; When we start thinking that it is because of us or our children (or whomever) that things go well, we are being prideful. I made a comment to a question like this earlier. We need to be grateful, not prideful. God has given us (everyone) everything we have…talents/abilities, common sense/intelligence, etc. When we don’t acknowledge His hand in things, we are being prideful…thinking our accomplishments or whatever came from us alone. Be GRATEFUL God gave you or your children the talent/abilities/whatever to do what you/they did/do well. Hope this makes sense!

Pride has several meanings and uses.
For instance, it is proudful for me to think that I’m better than you, and THAT is a sin.
However, to take pride in your children, is basically, an act of rejoicing over what can be, and has been, accomplished in another person’s life.
Then there’s the expression, "I take pride in the work I do" means that I do my best, that I try to do good enough work, that nobody would have any complaints about what I’m doing.
Sinful pride is all about dishonesty and deceit. It’s a slanted or twisted view of who or what you are. If I think I’m the best (whatever), then I have a lot to learn about myself. I’m lying to myself and to others, and when the truth DOES hit, it will hit hard, and it will hurt, because "pride comes before a fall." It’s the "I’m better than you" attitude, which really stinks!
But if I were the best (something?) in the room, and that is basically the truth of the matter, then it is NOT pride to say so, unless I get a haughty or puffed up attitude over it. If I think I’m better than you because I can DO something better than you, then THAT kind of pride IS a sin, because no matter how much stronger or faster or smarter I may be than you, I am not BETTER than you, as a person. But if a mutual friend needed some one to fix his computer, and if both you and I knew how to fix computers, and if I actually were better at fixing computers than you, I should be the one to fix the computer. That’s NOT "pride", that’s honesty. But if I have this "Aww, shucks, YOU go ahead; you’re better than me" attitude, that, too, is a form of pride because it is deceit. That is NOT humility! It is referred to as "the pride of the worm".
The opposite of pride means honesty. That’s what TRUE humility is.
That’s why God isn’t proudful or arrogant when He says He’s the most important Being in all of space and time – because He really IS. It’s honest. It’s brutally honest in fact, because we don’t like to think that some kind of Supreme Being is always telling us what to do. But He truly IS THE most qualified person, so He SHOULD be telling us what to do, and if we have any sense at all, we would listen and submit (obey) what He says. And, of course, when we don’t, we demonstrate that we really don’t have any sense, since it’s only sensible to obey God. But when we say absolutely "no!" to God, that takes away ALL sensibility, and THAT is why the Bible says "The fool says in His heart, No God!" because we truly become fools.
Well, that’s probably a little more than you wanted, but I had to make it (the explanation) complete. I hope it helps.

It’s been a while since I’ve been to a church or read a bible… but wasn’t it self pride that is the sin? Wanting to be better than everyone else is bad, thinking you are is really bad (ie: having pride in the work you do) but it’s ok to see others as better (ie: taking pride in your child)… or was I miss-interpreting that all those years I believed in a god?
So there you go Hawkeye, every time you said you were better than Frank you were committing a terrible sin! But I can say you were better than Frank, it’s not a sin if I say it.

It’s not showing pride in others that makes it a deadly sin, it actually quite the opposite, it and excessive love of ones self. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to acknowledge the good work of others, and hence excessive love of self. Don’t worry HP, YOU certainly don’t fall in that category..LOL! You are a good sole/soul, who has no problem giving back!
